It’s the time of year to celebrate romance again. Actually, it’s always the time of year to celebrate romance, but this is the time that society, at the prodding of greeting card and chocolate manufacturers, sets aside especially for such amorous festivities.
Every February, across the country, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first ‘valentine’ greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl — who may have been his jailor’s daughter — who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed ‘From your Valentine,’ an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure. It’s no surprise that by the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France.
I feel that Valentine dinners should be special. Choose your sweetie’s favorite foods and surprise him or her with a wonderful romantic meal and a special table set for two. If you have a fireplace, set a small table close by, and use your most delicate china and crystal. A few candles and a small, low bowl of fresh flowers will complete the atmosphere. .

Biscotti is an Italian cookie which is twice-baked. It makes a wonderful snack and is a great accompaniment to coffee, tea or wine. It is a light and textured cookie and makes a great alternative to the more sugary cookies available at the local supermarket. With biscotti you can really experiment with the ingredients: you can add chocolate chips, any time of nut, and even dried fruit like cranberries. Here Eva shows us her recipe for biscotti. Weve tried many different biscotti recipes and found this one to be the best.

Is California the only American region producing great wine? In this episode of IntoWineTV, host Lisa Kolenda and wine experts Bartholomew Broadbent and Pamela Busch convene at San Francisco’s CAV Wine Bar & Kitchen for the tasting and discussion of 25 different American wines NOT from California. On what was one of the hottest San Francisco days in recent memory (for those of you unfamiliar with the city, few places have air conditioning in San Francisco), Lisa, Bartholomew, and Pamela weathered the elements and tasted a variety of wines -sparklers, whites, reds, unique varietals, and sweet dessert wines- from Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, New Mexico, Texas, Washington, and Oregon.

Theme: Underdog Wines. In this tasting IntoWine is featuring wines from American producers found outside the state of California.

Wine: 2007 Hunt Country Vineyards Late Harvest Vignoles ($20)

Region: New York, Finger Lakes region

Alcohol content: 10%

Producer Notes:
Seductively sweet with citrus and exotic fruit aromas, and complexity from Botrytis. A superb example of this noble class of wines, our Late Harvest Vignoles have won FOURTEEN Gold and Double Gold medals since 2004. Perfect with apple or cherry pies, cheesecake, chocolate desserts or blue-veined cheeses.

The Late Harvest Vignoles wines have been Hunts most decorated over the years. This is a Sauternes or Trockenbeerenauslese style wine made from botrytized grapes harvested in late October. Hunt made their name producing fine Ice Wines, which have been served at the United Nations, ordered by the White House and featured on NBC’s Today Show. If anything, though, their Late Harvest Vignoles has received even higher critical acclaim: 15 Gold and Double-Gold medals for the last 3 vintages and featured in Food & Wine magazine.

Bartholomew Broadbent, CEO of Broadbent Selections. Bartholomew was named as one of the “fifty most influential people in the wine world” by Decanter Magazine. He is also widely considered to be one of the world’s foremost authorities on Port and Madeira.

Pamela Busch, Co-Owner and Wine Director at CAV Wine Bar & Kitchen in San Francisco.

Chocolate Dipped Fruit

Chocolate dipped fruit is beautiful on the plate and delicious on the lips. I use fresh fruit and dried depending on my mood and the time of year. In this chocolate dipped fruit recipe, Im using dried mangos for a simple but striking treat that makes a great impression. The sweet sugar, crunchy nuts and mangos all go together incredibly well.

For this recipe, all youll need is chocolate, dried fruit and nuts. There are a couple of optional ingredients to this chocolate dipped in fruit recipe flax seeds or coconut. Each add additional flavor, and in the case of flax seeds, a great source of Omega 3. We always try to work something healthy in to our recipes even desserts.
