  • In the Philippines a common food in the evenings is Balut. It is reported to have properties which increase endorphine and adrenaline levels which will increase brain and sexual activity.
Balut is a duck egg which has matured 16, 18 or even as much as 22 days. The two Balut I eat here in this video (my first balut ever) are 18 days old. The bones are not yet hardened and the bill is only a little firm.

The eating of these two balut was a challenge by my friend (the man in the hat next to me) and he picked up the balut on our way to a nice Korean BBQ place. The Balut ended up being my dessert after a great meal.

Balut has three flavors. First is the juice itself which is a bit like very dense chicken broth but more bitter. Second is the white part which really tastes like boiled duck egg. Third and most unique is the duckling itself which tastes somewhat like pureed gelatinous duck but there is something also very foreign about the flavor.

I have to admit, there was a surge of adrenaline when eating the Balut itself and the endorphine surge and associated euphoria hit about 20-30 minutes later.

I recommend the experience although eating more than one at a time is a bit harsh. Also, never eat them on an empty stomach.
